Sophomore receiver Dominique Douglas and freshmen defensive backs Cedric Everson and Abe Satterfield won’t return to Iowa after Christmas break, coach Kirk Ferentz announced Monday.
“Dominique Douglas, Cedric Everson and Abe Satterfield have decided to transfer from the University of Iowa and will continue their collegiate football careers elsewhere,” Ferentz said in a statement. “None of the three will be on Iowa’s roster when classes resume in January.”
Douglas, a Detroit native, led the Hawkeyes with 49 receptions for 654 yards as a true freshman in 2006. The 49 receptions were tops among freshmen nationally. He did not play this past season, though, after being arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a credit card in August.
While awaiting trial on the credit card charge, Douglas was arrested again, this time for shoplifting three DVDs from an Iowa City Wal-Mart in October. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was fined $100.
He has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in the credit card case and has a sentencing hearing scheduled for Jan. 25. He faces up to two years in prison and $6,250 in fines on the aggravated misdemeanor charge.
Everson, also from Detroit, played in five games as a true freshman this past season. He played mostly on special teams and finished with one tackle. He flashed dazzling potential, though, during the Hawkeyes' open practice in August, picking off three passes.
Satterfield redshirted his first season on campus. He is from Erie, Pa.
Everson and Satterfield were suspended from the team Oct. 18 for no specific reason, other than Ferentz saying, “They came up short in a couple areas. They’re not in good standing.” They remained “not in good standing” the rest of the season.
They have been implicated by newspaper reports in an investigation of an alleged sexual assault on Iowa’s campus. The alleged assault took place Oct. 14, days before Everson and Satterfield were suspended from the team. No charges have been filed in the investigation, which is ongoing. University officials released a statement last month indicating three football players had been questioned in the investigation.
Iowa is coming off a 6-6 season in which it missed a bowl game for the first time since 2000, Ferentz’s second year as head coach. The team’s on-field struggles were only half the story, as 11 players were arrested 15 times between the conclusion of spring practice in April and the end of the season in November.
The Hawkeyes open the 2008 season Aug. 30 with a home game against Maine.

" KF is very awake and aware that soon his job could be at stake. KOK must wake up or leave. As far as the 3 outgoing freshmen, follow the rules or play for Illinois. "

" Is anyone surprised by the fact that Dominque Douglas and the other 2 suspended players were released instead of being dismissed?! I think it might show how desperate Ferentz might be. Douglas should have been canned a long, long time ago, but because of his talent, Ferentz hung on as long as possible to see if things would turn around. This recruiting class doesn't reassure me at all that the program is moving forward. "

" This new recruiting class that we beat out MAC schools for should turn things around!
The real question is when do fans actually hold the coaches accountable for the inferior product and declining program that they now pay increased prices for every Saturday? "
