You need to know/Texas
— The Longhorns have held their first two opponents — UC-Irvine and Western Carolina — to an average of 41.5 points and 26.8 percent shooting. Texas has helped itself with a plus-17 rebounding advantage.
— Damion James, one of three Texas seniors in the lineup, needs 10 rebounds to become the third player in school history to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. He currently 11 rebounds per game.
— Coach Rick Barnes has spent time talking to his team in recent days about the need to pay attention to detail. Despite his third-ranked team’s wins by 47 and 32 points, he has been unhappy with his team’s turnovers and the flow of the Longhorns’ offense.
— Texas has played in the past 11 NCAA tourneys, and this is as veteran of a team Barnes has had to work with since the 2003-04 season. Three seniors are expected to start against the Hawkeyes. James, Justin Mason and Dexter Pittman have combined for 235 starts. By comparison, Iowa’s projected starting five has 64 collegiate starts between them.
You need to know/Iowa
— The Hawkeyes face a pair of challenges at the CBE Classic. In addition to facing Texas on Monday, Iowa will play either Pittsburgh or Wichita State on Tuesday. Pitt tied for second in the Big East a year ago but returns one starter from a 31-5 team. Wichita State returns three starters from a 17-17 team, and the Shockers will regain the services of senior point guard Clevin Hannah on Tuesday.
— Sophomore Matt Gatens is 13-for-13 at the free-throw line for the season.
— Iowa forward Aaron Fuller remains questionable because of an ankle sprain suffered during the first half of Friday’s win over Bowling Green.
— Monday’s game is the third between the teams in a November neutral-site tournament since the 2004-05 season. Iowa edged Texas 82-80 in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational in 2004 and led the Longhorns with 5:29 to play before falling 68-59 to Texas in the championship game of the 2005 Guardians Classic in Kansas City.
