And tickets have been on sale to the public for only one day.
Iowa athletic ticket manager Pam Finke said she thinks Hawkeyes fans are just getting used to the idea that their team will meet Georgia Tech in the Jan. 5 Bowl Championship Series game in Miami.
“I think this caught everybody by surprise a little bit,” Finke said Monday. “I’ve gotten a lot of e-mails from people who said they were looking at the Fiesta Bowl or Capital One Bowl, but they weren’t even thinking about the Orange Bowl.”
Iowa pre-sold between 13,000 and 14,000 tickets to season-ticket holders during the past two weeks, before it knew its bowl destination. Finke said close to 2,000 more were snapped up Monday after tickets went on sale to the public.
Even after Iowa meets its 17,500-ticket obligation, it will be able to get additional tickets from the Orange Bowl, which is played in the 74,000-seat Land Shark Stadium.
The Hawkeyes brought more than 30,000 people to Miami when they played USC there in 2003, and Finke expects the flow of orders to continue this week.
“I’m thinking the weather the next couple of days could drive a few more people to Miami,” she said.
Tickets are $135 apiece and can be purchased online at hawkeyesports.com, by calling (800) 424-2957 or over the counter at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
